Mobile Tricks: Our Top Tips to Save Money on your Cell Phone
There are a few mobile tricks that you can use to save yourself money on your cell phone bill. While the following list of mobile tricks is by no means complete, these should help get you started on a lower cell phone bill which can save you huge dollars over the life of the contract:
Mobile Trick #1: Review your bill monthly. While there's no trick to this one, we're surprised with how many people just pay their bill month over month without paying any attention to what they're really paying. Look at your overages and learn to block services you're not using, or those you don't want to 'accidentally' use. You can learn to block text by clicking here, and block data by clicking here. An accidental data click can cost you $1.99 per occurrence.
Mobile Trick #2: Don't carry insurance over 13 months. Cell phone insurance is a great way to cover your lost, stolen, or damaged cell phone, but after 13 months, you're eligible for a partial upgrade with most cell phone carriers. If you have a family plan and one cell phone is eligible, then cut your insurance off from another phone. If you have five lines and your insurance is even $5 a month, you're paying $275 for insurance if you carry it from month 14 - 24. Yikes!
Mobile Trick #3: If you're going to tether, you can do it for free. If you own a smartphone, and plan to tether your your cell phone to your laptop, you don't need to pay $20 for the service. June Fabrics ( http://www.junefabrics.com) offers software that can turn most cell phones into internet modems for a one time fee - this can save you around $450 on a two year contract.
Mobile Trick #4: Use text or GPS for directions and information, not 411. 411 costs $1.99 each call - which can cost you tons from month to month. Use short codes and text messaging if you don't have a data phone, ( click here for a list), or use the GPS system on your smartphone. Google Maps also does wonders for directions and phone numbers, and installs on most phones.
