No Contract IPhone Sales
Best Buy will start selling the iconic iPhone on April 3rd with no contract and at full price. Up to five phones can be purchased at $599.99 for the 8GB, and $699.99 for the 16GB version. Apple’s iPhone 3G at Best Buy®
While you can buy the iPhone for full price, it will still be locked to AT&T, and don't look for your friendly salesperson to unlock it or have any sympathy for you if you choose to jailbreak it and things go wrong.
Best Buy will still offer its Black Tie Protection for the iPhone for $14.99 a month, the only coverage available that covers broken or damaged iPhones. Apple will extend the warranty for around $80.00, and AT&T / Asurion still offers no insurance for lost/stolen/damaged phones.
While nearly everyone offers their own theories to the move, the Secret Agent believes its not a 4G iPhone or a 32GB iPhone that prompts AT&T or Apple to make this move, but sheer greed: You still have to pay $30.00 data plan if you put it on AT&T, and honestly, if you fork over 600 dollars for a phone, you're not going to leave that carrier any time soon.
