iPhone Predictive Text Help
The iPhone has both a predictive text engine as well as a spell checker that can be difficult to navigate, especially when those two features are unwanted or it keeps bringing up a word that it's learned. This tutorial will help you understand both these features, how to turn them off, and how to reset them when your predictive text has gone terribly wrong.
With predictive text, the iPhone is pretty smart. When typing a word, the iPhone figures out what word you want and makes a suggestion around it, which you see near the top of the keyboard. It will even invisibly increase the size of the landing area of what it thinks the next letter might be. So if you plan to type 'quickly' it will increase the size of the area around the letter 'U' because there's no other letter that generally follows the 'Q' in the english language.
However, predictive text can also get you into trouble, because the iPhone can also learn words not in the dictionary. The more you type the word, the more often it will be suggested. It also works in reverse; the less you use a word, the less likely it's going to pop up as a suggestion.
To take a suggestion, just hit the space key. If you continue to type, and don't correct your error, then it becomes a learned word in the iPhone database. If you've made a mess of things and want to get rid of all the words the iPhone has learned, go to your Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
If the Auto Correction feature bothers you, you can turn it off by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto Correction ON/OFF and switching it to "OFF"
