Unlock Cell Phones Properly

If you're attempting to get an unlocked code or jailbreak a cell phone - STOP. Consider what could go wrong with an incorrect unlock code, and whether or not you're prepared for that to happen. Before unlocking your phone, here are some steps to take and the items you'll need to help you through the process - and some suggested products to purchase to make sure it's done properly.

1) Back up your information. If you're unlocking or jail breaking an iPhone, then this will be taken care of from iTunes. However, for everyone else, backing up your contact information and pictures is high priority - and it's a good idea to do even if you're not unlocking a phone. We wrote an article about it here, and our suggested product is Datapilot backup software by Susteen. Best Buy usually has some in stock, and you can order them online and pick up in the store: Susteen Data Pilot Back-Up and Sync Kit for Most Motorola Cell Phones - they carry other connectors too, if you have an older cell phone.

2) Get unlocking codes you can trust. This is equally important when it comes to unlocking your cell phone, and we suggest staying away from 'free' codes. Getting the wrong code can render your phone inoperable, and manufacturers or cell phone providers aren't very interested in helping you out if you brick your cell phone. You might find software online (easier if you have a smartphone) to put it back together, but we don't want you to panic if you have an unlocking problem, so we suggest Unique Phones. They guarantee their work and have unlocked thousands (if not millions of cell phones).

3) Understand what the outcome will be of unlocking or jailbreaking your cell phone. Many people pay for one, but end up not getting what they want. If you want to unlock or jailbreak your cell phone, you might want to read this article here. It'll help you understand the difference between unlocking, jailbreaking, and reflashing your cell phone.

I have an LG from Verizon -had it since 2006. It has the ability to connect to the internet, but I have to buy a data plan. I also have the Verizon broadband access for my lap top. Is there any way to get the cell phone to connect to the internet without having to pay for a data plan? My bill is 154 every month as it is for two cell phones and broadband.
