The iPhone is so 2007

Interesting thing about the iPhone - as soon as a new one comes out, people are asking when the next iPhone is going to be launched. Frankly, people are bored of the iPhone.

For one thing, the form factor hasn't really changed since it was released in 2007. Sure, there was a minor construction difference between the 2G iPhone and the 3G iPhone, but it 's doubtful there's any other reason behind that than cost; plastic is cheaper than metal when it comes to rolling out phones. All in all, no different form factors, nothing really to please the folks who don't enjoy virtual keyboards, just the same little metal brick.

Now, there's no denying that the iPhone hasn't changed in it's three incarnations. Why, they've added more storage for your iTunes (up to a whopping 32G of storage). What people don't consider is the actual cost to fill up your iPhone with 99 cent iTunes - If you figure 1000 minutes of music per gigabyte of storage, and each song lasts about 4 minutes, you get 250 songs per gigabyte. So, with 250 songs multiplied by 99 cents per iTune multiplied by 32 gigabytes of storage, and congratulations, you paid $7920.00 to Apple. Relax, that's only $3960.00 if you got the 16GB iPhone.

In addition, they've added a magnetic compass, video, and an oleophobic screen to the iPhone when they launched the 3GS. Oh, and don't forget the stereo Bluetooth and the upcoming MMS messaging on September 25, 2009. Magnetic compass and nifty screen aside, stereo Bluetooth and MMS messaging have been on my grandma's Samsung phone, and she's had that much longer than 2007 (in fact, I don't think she's used it since 2007).

And applications? There's been applications for BlackBerrys and Windows Mobile long before any iPhone was launched. Most of the applications available are rewritten for the Apple platform, not the other way around.

Now, we're not going to deny that back in 2007, the iPhone was pretty groundbreaking, and it has laid the path for dozens of similar products. But most of those products started by emulating the iPhone, and have since moved on.

We suggest that it's time for the folks at Apple to move on as well. Give the public some different form factors, show some innovation. Otherwise, you might find yourselves wondering what happened because you thought you had the one item people wouldn't want to change. Remember the Motorola Razr?
