Move music files and pictures from your cell phone to your computer

People ask every day how to move pictures and music files to and from their cell phone to their computer. While some phones are more capable of transfering data than others, nearly every phone is capable of moving data in at least one of these four ways.

Data Cable:

This is nearly universal with all phones, and probably the one that most people think of when they need information from your phone. However, keep in mind that while most newer computers are filled with all sorts of drivers for computer peripherals, cell phones and mobile equipment are rarely considered compatible, at least until Windows 7 is release with advanced mobile device support. Even if your computer does recognize the device, there are times when more specific software is required with your data cable. We suggest Susteen (http://www.susteen.com) for this purpose. Not only is the software able to be updated with new cell phone releases, it also transfers pictures, ringtones, and contacts to your computer. Perfect if you lose your phone.

Bluetooth:

Newer cell phones allow for object push, which is perfect for moving pictures and sounds from your computer to your cell phone and vise versa. This is typically for more advanced (and patient) users, but once set up can be great if you have a household full of bluetooth capable phones and computers. If your desktop or laptop doesn't have Bluetooth capabilities, you can usually purchase them for about 30.00 USD. Just remember to set up the software first, as most bluetooth dongles are not entirely plug and play. You can also, if you do phone as modem or tethered internet services, use the bluetooth to set up that connection wirelessly. For versatility and the best bang for the buck, bluetooth is it.

MicroSD cards:

Most cell phones use MicroSD cards, and most laptops come with the larger SD card drive slot, so this method is easiest for many people. Even if your laptop or desktop doesn't come with the slot, you can still purchase a card reader on the cheap and hook it up to your USB connect, or, easier yet, some MicroSD cards come with the USB adapter. Make sure you format your card on the phone prior to moving it to your computer, and make sure you put the files in the folders that are created, otherwise your music, video and photos may not be able to be seen on your phone. Remember, while your computer is great at finding folders, most phones that are not smartphones lack the ability to browse folders.

Uploading:

Of course this is your cell phone provider's favorite way. In fact, some phones won't transfer pictures any other way. Make sure you have the cell phone carrier's data plan, or face additional data charges on you phone of $1 - $2 per MB. While that sounds like small change, if your resolution is up there, three to four pictures can spell $3 - $4 on your next cell phone bill. Imagine uploading a whole photo album!

Take the time to ask your salesperson prior to making a phone purchase how to get photos and digitally purchased downloads from your phone to your computer; and make sure you back them up often. There's nothing worse than being unprepared when a disaster strikes.
